Our First Public Art Installation: Sense of Connection

May 15, 2025

Sense of Connection

We’re thrilled to share the story of our first commissioned public art piece, Sense of Connection, now installed at Griffintown Park in Ferndale, Washington.

Like many projects, this one started with a spark — literally a message from our daughter and son-in-law, who live in Ferndale. They saw a call for artists to create a new sculpture for the park and encouraged us to apply. The idea of creating something meaningful for a public space, especially in a community so close to our hearts, immediately inspired us.

The Vision

As a team, Robin focuses on glass art and Chris brings years of experience working with metal. Together, we wanted to create something that captured the spirit of family, community, and togetherness — themes that feel more important now than ever.

During our first walk through Griffintown Park, we paused at the park’s sign and learned about Augustus Griffin, the park’s namesake. The story of the Griffin family resonated with us, and we knew that any sculpture we created needed to honor not only them but also the larger Ferndale community.

Installation and Community

After a few weather delays, it was finally time for installation. Seeing the sculpture in its new home, knowing how many hands had played a part — from public works to local supporters — was a moving experience for both of us. “It takes a village,” as Chris often says, and this project really brought that phrase to life.

A Sense of Connection — For Everyone

The three figures in the sculpture represent the Griffin family, but they also symbolize the wider Ferndale community and the power of connection. To us, Sense of Connection is about the beauty that happens when people come together to create, support, and celebrate one another.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible — from the first idea to the final installation. We hope this sculpture inspires hope and optimism, and becomes a gathering place for Ferndale families for many years to come.
